My Favourite Dish
67
The request was for your favourite dish: I expect it was about food, but surprisingly it was not the first thing that sprang to mind for me. Parkes Observatory was: a.k.a The Dish.
The Dish, for many years, was one of largest radio telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere. What Parkes Observatory is most famous for, along with Honeysuckle Creek, was its support of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The signal from the moon was beamed back to Parkes and Honeysuckle Creek before being bounced around the world.
A movie, appropriately named "The Dish" was also made around this event. It was a quirky film starring Sam Neill. Get the DVD for the extras, if nothing else. They are a history lesson in themselves.
The Dish at Parkes is in a paddock, where sheep commonly graze. The telescope is still one of the most powerful in the world, and most recently, on September 28 they detected a huge burst of radio energy which appears to have originated at least one-and-a-half billion light-years away. In fact, they dismissed it as man-made until it was later verified.
So, here's my favourite dish. It's most probably not what people were expecting...but there you go!

And yet not half as trivial as this comment. Go figure!
